Seasonal clubs

Nillumbik Shire Council maintains 21 natural turf sportsgrounds, one synthetic sportsground and 14 sports pavilions throughout the Shire. Council’s Recreation and Leisure team allocates these facilities to 27 sporting clubs, a number of schools and casual users.

The development and management of sports facilities within Nillumbik is undertaken with the aim of providing a diverse range of sporting opportunities for the community to participate in their chosen activity.

Clubs are required to make concerted efforts to encourage the participation of all people in their activities by ensuring venues and services are accessible and non- discriminatory. This includes the development of inclusive policies and practices, modification of activities, providing a greater opportunity for social participation, and greater attention to the development of a more welcoming, supportive and accepting social environment.

Managing club growth and expectations

Nillumbik continues to experience significant levels of growth in participation and club member numbers for summer sports. These place increased levels of wear and tear on playing surfaces particularly from training activities. Council recognises and continues to support the inclusion of Nillumbik residents into sports clubs; however, clubs cannot continue to grow and increase member numbers without change to traditional activities.

With each club’s cooperation and Council’s annual/seasonal ground maintenance program, sportsgrounds will be able to cope with current levels of usage.

It is important that clubs considering increasing team numbers contact the Sport and Recreation Liaison Officer to discuss ground availability prior to submitting a seasonal application.
