Climate Cafe - Fire Preparedness with Alice Gower
Next date: Thursday, 28 November 2024 | 07:30 PM
to 09:30 PM
Our next (and last for the year) climate cafe is on the topic of Fire Preparedness by Alice Gower.
Alice will discuss how fire behaves - what is required for a fire and understanding the energy released, including the influence of weather, fuel and topography on fire behaviour, how fires propagate and spread in the landscape, and how fire directly impacts the things we care about - people, houses and ecosystems.
Her talk will also cover the mechanisms used by government to reduce bushfire risk and their application locally, touching on the bushfire prone area and bushfire management overlays, as well as other strategies such as fuel reduction burning.
Alice is a dedicated land management professional with qualifications in forest science, environmental science, landscape architecture, and leadership and management. She has worked in the bushfire management sector for 15 years in both government and private consulting. She has delivered multiple projects relating to bushfire and emergency management, including the development of a popular website for government agency staff to view forecast bushfire weather.
She is currently coordinating the implementation of the Australian Fire Danger Rating System within the Department of Environment, Land Water and Planning.
It's informal, friendly and everyone is welcome.
Join us from 6pm to share a meal or drink with us, or come at 7.30pm for the presentation and discussion afterwards. We look forward to seeing you there!
