Nillumbik Shire Council's Biodiversity Strategy 2024-2034(PDF, 9MB) demonstrates Council’s commitment to protecting and enhancing the Shire’s biodiversity and environment for the future.

It provides a framework to guide Council action over a 10-year period, in urban and rural contexts and across public and private land.

Goals and targets

The goals and targets of the strategy are:

  • Goal 1 – The biodiversity of Nillumbik is healthy

Target: Achieve a net gain in the extent, connectivity and condition of habitat by 2034

  • Goal 2 – Nillumbik’s community values and cares for nature

Target: That 70% of Nillumbik residents care for nature by 2034

Focus areas

Our four focus areas for action are:

  1. Leadership and advocacy
  2. People and partnerships
  3. Species and habitat enhancement
  4. Mitigating threatening processes and impacts

The strategy considers threats and opportunities, seeks to connect people with nature, seeks to enable action that will guide conservation where it is needed most, and recognises that harnessing a collective effort is instrumental.

Council gratefully acknowledges the many individuals, volunteers and organisations contributing to positive biodiversity outcomes in our Shire.

What we are doing to protect and enhance biodiversity

Each year, Council will endorse an annual implementation plan that lists the action that will be prioritised that year.

In 2024-25, Council is currently in Year 1 of implementation.

The Year 1 Biodiversity Implementation Plan (2024-25) will be considered at one of the first Council Meetings of our new Council, following the Council election period.  A copy will be provided here, once endorsed.

Additionally, we continue to, for example, manage our 100 bushland reserves and wetlands; and provide support to landholders to assist them to care for their land.

Information is also available on our web pages about some of the environment projects and programs we deliver and upcoming events.

How are we tracking?

We have 14 indicators to help track whether we are successfully progressing towards achieving the goals and targets of our Biodiversity Strategy. They are listed on pages 32-33 of the strategy.

This indicator data will be reported on annually and will be posted here. The first update will be provided at the end of our first year of implementation.
