Natural environment

Nillumbik is home to a wonderfully diverse range of indigenous flora, fauna and habitats.

  • Over 990 indigenous flora (plant species) and 400 indigenous fauna (animal species) have been recorded here
  • A large proportion of the Shire is covered with remnant indigenous vegetation
  • Most of our biodiversity is on private land
  • Council manages 100 bushland and wetland reserves and more than 500,000 trees

Because our biodiversity is threatened by processes such as climate change, urban development, human disturbance, invasive species (weeds, pest animals and pathogens), and ecosystem modification, we all need to work together - to respond to these challenges and protect our natural environment.

Information on our wonderful bushland reserves and the trees of Nillumbik; native plants and animals; weeds; and pest animals such as deer, rabbits, foxes, swooping birds and more can be found below.
