Forest Health monitoring

A woman is at a desk with a pen in her hand looking at a computer screen. There is night vision footage of a wombat on the screen.

Kicking off in 2017, the Forest Health program involves using cameras and sound recorders to register the animals that live in Nillumbik forests.

As a volunteer, you can get involved in three different activities:

  • assisting in fieldwork
  • identifying photos
  • identifying bird calls.

You’ll get experience in setting up a fauna monitoring station and identifying animals. This data is used to monitor environmental health across the Shire, which helps inform conservation work.

What to expect

There's no minimum time commitment. You can choose to join one of our fieldwork days (spring to summer) or work online for as long as you want.

If you choose fieldwork, you’ll join a Council officer who will guide you through the process. You are required to wear sturdy closed shoes, long-sleeved shirt, long pants and a hat. If you can, bring a backpack to help carry the equipment. Transport is provided from and to Council’s office in Greensborough.

If you prefer to volunteer in identifying animals, we regularly offer workshops to help you understand how to use our online platforms for images and sound recordings. We also have comprehensive written manuals in case you can't attend.

What you need

You don't need any previous training or experience to assist with our programs.

Fieldwork requires a good level of fitness. Some of our sites have long walks, but we always let you know what to expect.

Anyone of any age or fitness level can volunteer in identifying animals, and you can even do this from home. You only need a device with access to the internet.

How to apply

To volunteer doing fieldwork, you’ll need to provide two references.
