"Nillumbik War on Waste began during Plastic Free July 2019 when a group of friends concerned about the plastic waste crisis got together to ‘do’ something.

NWOW’s purpose is to bring together community, business and local government and provide a value proposition to change practices. Members collected signatures for a petition to Council to phase out single use plastic from Nillumbik by 2021. The petition was tabled at A Nillumbik Shire Council meeting and referred internally for review. Council then endorsed a motion in June 2021 to phase out single use plastics in Council operations and events

From time to time NWOW also pop up in local shopping centres to sing their war on waste song and hand out boomerang bags. Look out for the big bananas!  You can find out more at the Nillumbik War on Waste Facebook page"

NERP is a network of over 100 people from Melbourne’s northeast suburbs who are dedicated to living more sustainable, productive, and fulfilling lives through permaculture. Permaculture folk are guided by three simple ethics: care of the earth, care of people, and fair share. For NERP, living sustainably isn’t just good for the environment, it’s good for the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities, and society as a whole. NERP regularly organise tours of members’ gardens that demonstrate the many ways local people are growing food, conserving energy, and sharing resources with friends and neighbours.

"SHIFT is a group of Hurstbridge locals who are passionate about promoting a more resilient and ecologically sound way of living in our local community. Our aim is to challenge modern lifestyles that foster individualism, stress, and consumption, and show people that sustainability isn’t just good for the planet, it’s also a fun, healthy and rewarding way to live.

We host self-sufficiency workshops that teach practical hands-on skills, and run campaigns on important topics like community recycling and shopping locally. One of our main aims is to create a bank of community sharing resources that can help to support, inspire, and connect locals to live more sustainably. The Edible Hub community garden in Hurstbridge is an inclusive space for people to connect and learn about topics of food growing, community resilience, and sustainability. Our volunteers are in the garden every Thursday at 9.30am for an informal catch up and low-energy gardening session, at which anyone is welcome to attend and no ongoing commitment to the garden is required.

The Edible Hub runs a twice monthly food swap and Food is Free table designed to increase community access to healthy homegrown food and reduce the amount of food-related waste going to compost and landfill. Anyone in the community can come along to a swap or take from the Food is Free table, and you don’t need to contribute anything or leave items in exchange. We also maintain one of the Home Harvest seed libraries, from which people are encouraged to take seeds, grow the plants, and then collect seeds to donate back to the library for others to share. Saving locally grown seeds makes for stronger plants adapted to the local climate, which makes for an overall more resilient food system. 
Finally, the Edible Hub has recently partnered with two members of the Women’s Leadership and Connections Program to start a monthly repair café at the Hurstbridge Hub. At the repair cafe, volunteer fixers perform simple repairs on all kinds of everyday items that would otherwise be thrown out and sent to landfill. Attendees sit with the repairer while they talk you through what they're doing, making it a place to have a chat, meet new people, and learn valuable DIY skills that can save money and reduce waste.

The Victorian Frog Group aims to provide for the needs of all those interested in Australian native frogs. They aim to facilitate education and conservation through encouraging a close contact with nature. They have a diverse membership with people including those with a general interest in frogs, gardeners, naturalists, teachers, pet owners, zookeepers, zoologists, research scientists and university academics.

The group offers a unique opportunity for you to meet people with similar interests, get to know more about frogs and get involved in the many exciting activities that are coordinated by the group. Whatever your interest in frogs, you'll find it at the Victorian Frog Group.

Waterwatch is a free river health education and monitoring program which aims to increase community understanding, participation and ownership of local river health issues. It involves schools and the community in the assessment and monitoring of water quality in our streams and wetlands. Our Waterwatch team provides talks on freshwater ecology to schools and groups, provides free training and events and co-ordinates the volunteer monitoring program.

The Yarra Riverkeeper Association is a not-for-profit community organisation formed in 2004 by a group of citizens who love the Yarra River and care for its future. Its aim is to protect and restore the Yarra River and its tributaries, from source to mouth, for current and future generations.
