Frequently asked questions

Why is the location moving?

The BMX Park that was to be constructed at 145 Allendale Road, Diamond Creek is moving to Challenger Street Reserve, Diamond Creek.

This decision was made after further assessments revealed the presence of culturally significant artefacts and the site being in a flood-prone area.

What are the benefits to this new location?

The Challenger Street Reserve, Diamond Creek site meets the requirements for a BMX park, ensuring minimal environmental and cultural impact, it is located adjacent to the Diamond Creek Trail and will provide easy access for riders.

How did Council assess the original site and why did we not know the site was not suitable from the start?

Council undertook thorough feasibility to determine the preferred site for the BMX Park, considering a range of factors including access, environmental, safety and security.

145 Allendale Rd was deemed the most suitable option at the time and underwent more detailed investigation including a Cultural Heritage Assessment and flood modelling.

Based on the outcomes of these investigations, this site was deemed unsuitable for the proposed project.

Has this project had any community engagement so far?

Council first engaged with the community in late 2021 - early 2022, in August/September 2022 we provided the draft concept plans to the community for feedback.

Why has it taken this long to get to this stage?

Council has followed appropriate processes for required assessments.

While the process has been complex, it reflects Council’s commitment to getting it right for our young people, our environment, and our community.

Will the BMX Park concept plans change from the original concepts?

The BMX Park concept plans will be adapted slightly to ensure suitability for the new site location, but the key features and overall design will remain as planned (and consulted on during previous engagement with the community).

When will the community have a chance to have their say on the recreational park around the BMX Park?

In addition to the new BMX Park, the Victorian Government has committed to fund $2.16 million through the Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF) for a community and recreation park, which will include infrastructure surrounding the BMX Park/jumps.

The community will have an opportunity to provide further input on the community recreation park in coming months that could include:

  • play equipment designed for young children and teenagers
  • public toilets
  • shelters with BBQs and picnic tables
  • a large bike shelter near the jumps which could include bike hoops and a bicycle repair station.

How can I provide my feedback and/or get involved?

To stay up to date and provide feedback on the recreational park surrounding the BMX Park, register at BMX park on Participate Nillumbik.

What are next steps for this project?

The BMX Park jumps have been designed for the original site but will need to be modified to suit the new location. View the designs and project background.

We will be engaging with the community further about what people want to see included in the recreational park surrounding the BMX Park, this could include features such as toilets, amenities, learn-to-ride track and car parking.

When will the BMX Park construction start?

We are still some way off digging holes and starting construction. But the change of location is a big step in getting things moving.
