Request an extension of time for a building permit

The period covered by a building permit depends on the work being done.

  • Domestic works - building permit is valid for two years. You must carry out an inspection within 12 months of the approval date or the permit will lapse.
  • Swimming pools and spas - building permit is valid for 18 months. You must carry out an inspection within 12 months of the approval date or the permit will lapse. You must complete the work six months after starting.
  • Commercial works - building permit is valid for three years. You must carry out an inspection within 12 months of the approval date or the permit will lapse.

When to request an extension

If you are unable to commence or complete works within the timeframe specified on your building permit, you must apply for an extension of time before the permit expires.

If you lodge an extension of time letter after the permit has lapsed, you will be required to apply for a new building permit. This will entail the submission of all documentation including payment of all fees.
