Work resumes on Alistair Knox Park toilet facility

Construction of the new Changing Places facility and public toilet block at Alistair Knox Park has resumed.

Works were paused in June following the discovery of small fragments of bonded (non-friable) asbestos during excavation works on the site, which was a former landfill. The asbestos, which was buried, was not considered a risk to park users.

Qualified asbestos specialists have removed the contaminated material and conducted further testing on site. As a precaution, these specialists will manage all remaining excavation works with a management plan in place as Council’s contractors return to the site to resume construction works. The playground is not affected and safe for use.

Completion of the project remains on track for late this year. The facility will include Nillumbik’s first Changing Places accessible toilet and change room, two more accessible toilets and four standard cubicle toilets.

Changing Places facilities are larger than standard accessible toilets with extra features and more space to meet the needs of people with high support needs. They include a height-adjustable, adult-sized change table, electronic hoists, accessible toilet and shower.

Other works include accessible paths, lighting, landscaping, street furniture, art works and accessible car parking close to the facility. The existing toilet block in Alistair Knox Park will be demolished upon completion of the new facility.
