Street tree program branches out
Published on 10 December 2024
Help us grow a greener and cooler Nillumbik by requesting a tree for your naturestrip.
This program aims to expand our urban tree canopy, which plays a crucial role in reducing heat, improving air quality, and enhancing the overall wellbeing of our community and character of our neighbourhoods.
Trees provide shade, reduce carbon emissions and contribute to biodiversity, making neighbourhoods more livable and sustainable.
The program is one of the actions of our new Nillumbik Urban Tree Canopy Strategy.
By participating, residents can help us create cooler, greener streets while fostering a sense of community pride and environmental stewardship.
The trees will be planted by Council’s tree planting contractor, and will be maintained for two years after planting. This includes watering, mulching, pruning and checking for pests and diseases.
Residents can apply to have a tree on their nature strip at Council’s website.
The suitability of the site will be assessed and the species of tree selected based on a number of criteria including:
- Existing vegetation
- Presence of power lines
- Size of the nature strip
- Proximity to intersections
- Neighbourhood character.
While the program is open to all areas of the Shire, we are particularly looking to improve areas with lower tree canopy coverage.
Trees will be Australian natives or indigenous to the area.
Applications to have a street tree are open until 31 January for the 2025 planting program.
