A bold solo exhibition by LGBTQIA+ artist Alun Rhys Jones is showing in Nillumbik this Midsumma Festival.

Alun Rhys Jones’ exhibition titled Arena uses large-scale drawings and paintings to explore the impact of stereotypes and media attention on the LGBTQIA+ community.

Proudly part of the Midsumma Festival, a key event celebrating LGBTQIA+ arts and culture across Victoria, the exhibition runs from Saturday 25 January to Sunday 2 March at the Eltham Library Community Gallery.

Alun’s work shines a light on the issues and discrimination LGBTQIA+ people face living within a society that often challenges their identity.

The exhibition is designed to spark conversation about the importance of visibility, acceptance, and mental health within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Alun said mental health challenges were significant for people who identify as LGBTQIA+.

“The challenges of being accepted and seen are pronounced, ongoing and very real.”

In Arena, Alun’s artworks will be presented in unconventional ways to echo the way the queer community often coexists within heteronormative society.

Some pieces will be hung, while other works will be installed in unique ways, inviting visitors to experience the art from different perspectives.

Council supports diversity and inclusion in the community, offering visitors a chance to learn, reflect, and appreciate the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.

Alun said visibility and representation were incredibly important for the LGBTQIA+ community and need to be maintained to allow for inclusion, acceptance and diversity.

“I hope the visibility in holding this exhibition will bolster acceptance and help others on their own personal journeys,” Alun said.
