We are seeking nominations for our second annual Nillumbik Community Awards. If you know an individual or group making a significant contribution in Nillumbik, we want to hear about them.

The inaugural awards, held in August this year, were a huge success and saw more than 40 nominations across our award categories. Now you have another chance to help us recognise our community heroes.

The award categories are:

  • Nillumbik Volunteer
  • Nillumbik Community Group
  • Nillumbik Young Citizen (aged up to 25).

There will also be awards recognising significant contributions in the following areas:

  • Contribution to Arts, Heritage and Culture
  • Contribution to Diversity and Inclusion
  • Contribution to Environment and Sustainability
  • Contribution to Reconciliation.

Mayor Ben Ramcharan said the Nillumbik Community Awards are the perfect way to recognise and celebrate our community champions.

“Within clubs, groups, schools and organisations, we have so many wonderful people going out of their way to help others,” Cr Ramcharan said.

“By recognising groups and individuals in categories including the environment, arts, inclusion and reconciliation, the awards highlight the efforts of different community members.

“We have many people committed to various causes in Nillumbik that are purely for the benefit of others. Those people deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated,” he said.

Our 2023 Volunteer of the Year recipient, Lisal O’Brien of Arthurs Creek, is someone who has committed plenty of time for the benefit of others. She has helped educate young members of her community about fire behaviour and the science of fire since the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

Always community minded, Lisal said the best thing about being named Volunteer of the Year is that it “shines a light on community, and that is the highest priority”.

The next round of Nillumbik Community Awards will be presented in August 2024. Nominations are now open and will close at 5pm on 10 May 2024.
