Go ahead for Graysharps Road Precinct Plan
Published on 25 May 2022
Work will soon begin on revitalising the Graysharps Road Open Space Precinct in Hurstbridge, following Council’s endorsement of the final concept plan for the area.
With the recently completed Diamond Creek Trail extension ending in the precinct, the project will help create an important new gateway into Hurstbridge. The final
plan includes:
- New multi-use outdoor netballs courts
- Amphitheatre to support events and community activities
- Extensive landscaping including indigenous and native plants
- Nature play area
- Accessible toilet block
- Picnic shelters and barbecues
- Tiered spectator area for the Hurstbridge High Oval
- Expanded car park with up to 50 spaces including disabled parking spots
- Shared trail linking the new Diamond Creek Trail with the township
- Adaptive bike shed
- Horse hitching point
- Drinking fountains.
The Victorian Government has provided a Growing Suburbs Fund grant of $2 million to implement parts of the plan, while Council will invest $925,000 into upgrading the netball courts.
Mayor Frances Eyre said plans for the land, the site of the former Hurstbridge High School, had been many years in the making.
“It’s great to move to the next stage of the project,” she said.
“It’s particularly exciting with the opening of the Diamond Creek Trail to Hurstbridge bringing so many people through this area and into the township. This will help create a new gateway as well as a wonderful community space and sporting hub.
“I would like to thank the Growing Suburbs Fund for the $2 million going towards this project.”
Bunjil Ward Councillor Karen Egan said the project had been one of her priorities since being elected to Council.
“This is great news for the Hurstbridge community,” Cr Egan said. “The netball court upgrade builds on the recent investment by Council and the Victorian Government into the precinct’s sporting facilities including the $1.4 million Hurstbridge Multi-Use Facility at Ben Frilay Oval, which was completed in February, as well as lighting upgrades for both ovals.
“I’m also looking forward to seeing more detailed designs showing the configuration of the horse access area as well as improvements for horse riders such as horse troughs and horse yards.”
Next steps involve developing more detailed designs, however work will start soon on the bike trail around the Hurstbridge High Oval connecting the Diamond Creek Trail to the township.
