Council named 2023 AFR BOSS Best Places to Work List – again!
Published on 21 April 2023
Nillumbik Shire Council has again been named as one of the best places to work in Australia and New Zealand.
We are honoured to be awarded sixth place in the AFR BOSS Best Places to Work List, in the Government, Education and Not-for-Profit category.
The prestigious annual list, published by the Australian Financial Review and BOSS Magazine, is based on a rigorous assessment process managed by Australia’s leading behavioural science consultancy Inventium that ranks the best workplaces across 10 different industries.
More than 700 organisations were nominated across Australia and New Zealand.
The award is Nillumbik’s second nod in three years, after we took out third place in the same category in 2021.
Nillumbik was again the only local government organisation across Australia and New Zealand to be recognised.
The list recognises forward-thinking organisations that push boundaries and pioneer new ways of working when it comes to workplace policies and practices.
Nillumbik was recognised for a number of achievements and practices around health and wellbeing, our Mental Health First Aider workforce, our commitment to professional development, and staff survey responses.
Chief Executive Officer Carl Cowie said Council, Nillumbik’s biggest employer, was truly honoured to be included in the list.
“It’s such an honour to be named in the top 10 in these outstanding awards for a second time in three years.”
“We have a deeply passionate, collaborative and driven team here at Nillumbik, who care about what they do and how they do it. I want to thank everyone.
“We always strive to make a positive impact within the community we serve, and to do that, we aim to help our staff feel supported.
“Our focus continues to be on staff and community wellbeing, and getting the balance right.”
The assessment was made up of a staff survey and a written submission, with questions relating to policies, practices and programs that exist within the organisation to support and get the best out of employees.
The methodology is underpinned by Inventium’s Workplaces of the Future framework, which identifies 10 factors critical to employees feeling motivated and engaged at work and is supported by extensive research.
The framework is based on hundreds of research papers from universities including Harvard and Stanford.
Inventium founder Dr Amantha Imber said data was analysed from tens of thousands of employees.
“These are workplaces that offer employees ultra-flexibility, that place wellbeing at the heart of the employee experience, and that ensure people feel a sense of belonging, no matter what their background is,” she said.
BOSS Magazine editor Sally Patten said it was great to see so many companies recognise their employees for more than just the tasks they perform.
“These employers are helping staff to fulfil their multiple roles, as parents, carers and partners, who want to grow and learn, and stay healthy,” she added.
