Council elections

Nillumbik Shire Council is divided into seven wards with a Councillor elected to represent each ward. Elections are run by the Victorian Electoral Commission and are held every four years.

Councillors vote on who will be Mayor and Deputy Mayor each year.

Voting

Voting in local government elections is compulsory for all enrolled voters.

If you were enrolled and it looks like you didn't vote, the Victorian Electoral Commission may send you an Apparent Failure to Vote notice in the coming months. You will need to respond to this notice, or you may receive a fine. For more information visit the Fines and reviews page on the VEC website.

Candidate information

Campaign donations

All local government election candidates are required to provide a record of whether they did or didn't receive any donations, gifts or in-kind support for their election campaigns.

View the campaign donation register.

Donation return forms are included in candidate information packs from the VEC and must be submitted to the Nillumbik Shire Council CEO by Thursday 5 December 2024, even if you don’t receive a donation or gift. Visit the Local Government Inspectorate website for information about the requirements for campaign donations.

Information requests from candidates

Candidates have equal rights to information from Council that is relevant to their election campaign. To ensure Council doesn't unfairly provide an advantage or disadvantage to a candidate, Council maintained a register of information provided to candidates during the election period.

Election Period Policy

During the election period, the Election Period Policy ensures that the election is conducted fairly, equitably and ethically, and that Council business continues throughout the election period in a responsible and transparent manner.
