Nillumbik Shire Council is a proud supporter of the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign.

This global campaign aims to raise awareness and galvanise individuals, communities and organisations to address gender inequalities, call out harmful gender stereotypes to prevent violence, and create a more safe and equal society.

The campaign begins each year on 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women), and concludes on 10 December (International Human Rights Day).

2022 campaign

In 2022, these series of videos were produced as part of a recommendation from young people at the 2022 Nillumbik Youth Summit. Please watch some local young people sharing their experiences of gender inequality in their everyday lives.

Our commitment

Nillumbik Shire Council is committed to preventing violence against women, family violence and promoting gender equality.

This is an important issue that affects many people, and we are certainly not immune in Nillumbik. In 2021-22, there were 454 family violence incidents in our Shire, and intimate partner violence remains the greatest health risk factor for women aged 25-44. There is no excuse for any type of violence or disrespect, and we need to work together to call it out.

In 2020, Nillumbik's response to the 16 Days of Activism campaign was highlighted by Respect Victoria and the Municipal Association of Victoria in their 2020 campaign showcase booklet(PDF, 7MB)Nillumbik was also featured in the 2019 booklet.

Books that celebrate individuality and promote gender equity

What we read has a strong influence on what we think.

Choose books that challenge stereotypes, gives characters non-traditional roles and help you think about gender and gender equality differently.

Over the past couple of years, healthAbility and the Eltham Bookshop created posters with some suggested books for children and young people.
