Nillumbik Leaders

Council believes that every member of our community has the potential to be a leader and make a positive impact. That's why we're excited to invite you to apply for our community leadership program, Nillumbik Leaders.

The program is designed to inspire, support, and upskill Nillumbik community members to become effective leaders.

About the program

Nillumbik Leaders focuses on developing individuals' leadership skills, fostering community engagement, promoting diversity and inclusivity, and establishing a robust network of leaders and stakeholders within the community. 

The program will be delivered from August to November 2025, over nine fortnightly sessions at Hurstbridge Community Hub on Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm.

A light meal will be provided at the start of each session as an opportunity to network and build relationships.

6 August Welcome to the program Welcome and housekeeping. Introduction and icebreaker activities
20 August Leadership starts with you! Introduce the concept of leadership and different leadership  styles. Learn about the importance of looking after yourself as leader and boundary setting.
3 September Breaking Barriers: Empowering Inclusive Leadership Explore the importance of access, diversity, and inclusion in  leadership roles. Participants will explore power imbalances and   barriers to participation and learn strategies to overcome them.
17 September Understanding Local Government Explore the role of local government and its connection with the state government, including its impact on the community. Gain a deeper understanding of how local government functions and discover ways to contribute to community development and positive change.
1 October Collective action and advocacy Learn to harness your experiences and cultivate key messages from your stories, so that you can be heard. Develop the capability to lead and inspire, by building collective action and solidarity among your community members as you work towards common goals.
15 October Communicate with confidence Develop essential communication skills, including networking, conflict resolution, and public speaking. Learn how to express ideas, opinions, and perspectives clearly and confidently.
29 October Ideas to action Gain an introduction to project management, from developing a plan to collaborating with others to bring ideas to life. Learn key aspects of project planning, implementation, and evaluation.
12 November Reflect, learn and grow Reflect on key learnings from past sessions and set practical goals for your leadership journey. Explore opportunities to stay engaged and create impact. Connect with Council Officers in a speed date session to gain valuable insights and build meaningful relationships in your area of interest.
26 November Graduation celebration Celebrate the completion of the Nillumbik Leaders and the milestones you've reached throughout the program.

Eligibility

Nillumbik Leaders aims to represent Nillumbik’s diversity and is inclusive of all genders, age groups, abilities, Aboriginality, cultures, language backgrounds, sexual orientation, education and employment status. The recruitment of participants will aim to reflect diversity in Nillumbik. 

The program is open for anyone who lives, works, volunteers, studies or plays in Nillumbik aged 18 or over who:

  • can commit to attending all the workshops
  • has an interest in developing their community leadership skills
  • is motivated to participate and engage in community life
  • has a desire to use their skills to make a difference and enhance the Nillumbik community
  • is a new or emerging leader interested in developing their leadership skills.
